In the same  manner as the majority of photographs I take, the little photo sessions with families are very laid back situations. Usually taking the form of a nice walk around a natural location, such as a National Trust property or local woodland. At other times, it’s suitable to use the family’s own garden, or at home indoors, if the weather’s not behaving.

I find the casual strolls to be the best approach, as it’s not constantly taking photos for a couple of hours, so the children don’t get bored and are free to run around or explore as we go. The examples below were taken on such outings (click on each image for larger versions).
